Have you ever woken up in the morning with a sense of pain or soreness in your facial area? If so, you may be suffering from bruxism. Bruxism is an oral health condition that arises due to the clenching, grinding, and gnashing of your teeth, often while you sleep. Inspect your teeth and gums daily to ensure you’re not grinding your teeth at night.

When you wake up, look for physical damage to your teeth and gums. This includes indentations on your tongue, a general flatness or wearing out of your teeth, a breakdown of your tooth enamel, increase tooth sensitivity, and cheek tissue damage on the inner linings of your mouth.

Sores and pains associated with bruxism can arise as well. If you have trouble opening or closing your mouth when you awake, or if you experience any headaches that tend to originate around your temples, bruxism may be to blame. Other indications of bruxism include a general soreness or pain in your jaw or face, pain similar to earaches that do not originate in your ears, or an excessive tightness in your jaw when you wake up in the morning. For a comprehensive oral exam, visit your dentist.
