Root Canal Treatment in McKinney, TX

Root canals have a reputation that does not match the reality of what the procedure actually involves. Most patients are surprised to find that it is not much different from getting a filling. At Vital Dental, Dr. Asad Ahsan DDS offers expert root canal treatment in McKinney, TX, with modern techniques and digital technology to make the experience more comfortable than most people picture when they hear those two words.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is a procedure to remove infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth. All teeth have a soft inner core called the pulp, which has nerves and blood vessels. Bacteria can get into the pulp and cause an infection from a deep cavity, a crack, or a traumatic injury.

That infection causes pain and swelling, and if left untreated, it can spread to the surrounding bone and tissue. A root canal clears out that infected tissue, cleans and shapes the canals inside the tooth, and seals everything off so the infection cannot return.

The tooth stays in place, and with a crown placed over it afterward, it can function normally for many years.

Signs You Might Need a Root Canal

Not every toothache means you need a root canal, but there are specific symptoms that point toward pulp infection. You should come in and get evaluated if you are experiencing:

  • Persistent or severe tooth pain, especially when biting or applying pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold that lingers after the source is removed
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gum near the affected tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on the gum that keeps coming back
  • Tooth discoloration that has developed without an obvious cause
  • A cracked or chipped tooth that has started causing pain

Some infected teeth cause very little pain at all, which is why regular dental X-rays are important. Dr. Ahsan can often detect signs of infection on imaging before symptoms become severe.

The Root Canal Process at Vital Dental

Before anything is scheduled, Dr. Ahsan examines the tooth, takes digital X-rays, and determines whether a root canal is the right course of action. If it is, he explains exactly what the procedure involves and answers any questions before you leave.

The tooth and surrounding area are fully numbed with local anesthesia before anything begins. For patients who feel anxious about dental procedures, we offer laughing gas, oral sedation, and IV sedation so you can stay relaxed throughout. Dr. Ahsan does not start working until you are completely comfortable.

A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber. The infected tissue is carefully removed, and the canals inside the roots are cleaned and shaped using fine instruments. The canals are then irrigated to remove any remaining bacteria and debris.

Once the canals are clean, they are filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha, which seals the space and prevents reinfection. A temporary or permanent filling is placed to close the access point at the top of the tooth.

After a root canal, you’ll typically want to cap the tooth with a crown to protect it because the tooth is more fragile after its pulp is removed. Dr. Ahsan takes digital impressions to ensure your crown fits perfectly and looks natural. The crown is usually placed at a follow-up appointment, once the tooth has settled.

What Happens If You Skip a Root Canal?

A tooth infection does not clear up on its own. Without treatment, the infection continues to spread into the surrounding bone and tissue. An abscess can form, which causes significant pain and swelling. In more serious cases, the infection can spread beyond the jaw entirely.

Eventually, the tooth reaches a point where it can no longer be saved, and extraction becomes the only option. Saving a natural tooth is almost always the better outcome. Replacing a lost tooth with an implant or bridge costs significantly more than a root canal and crown, and nothing functions quite as well as keeping your own tooth.

Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about the services.

How long does a root canal take?

Most root canals are completed in one to two appointments, depending on the complexity of the tooth and the number of canals involved. Front teeth typically have fewer canals than back molars, which can take a little longer. Dr. Ahsan will give you a realistic time estimate during your consultation.

Can I drive myself home after a root canal?

If you choose local anesthesia only, you can drive yourself home. If you opt for oral sedation or IV sedation, you will need someone to drive you and stay with you for a few hours afterward.

How long does a root canal-treated tooth last?

With a proper crown placed over it, a root canal-treated tooth can last many years and in some cases a lifetime. How well you maintain the surrounding gum and bone health plays a big role in longevity.

What if my tooth hurts after the root canal?

Some soreness in the first few days is completely normal as the surrounding tissue heals. If pain is severe, getting worse rather than better, or accompanied by swelling after the first few days, call the office so Dr. Ahsan can take a look.
